Green Acorn Ecology: Professional Ecological Surveys, Biodiversity Net Gain and Planning Support Across the South of England

Welcome to Green Acorn Ecology

Green Acorn Ecology was founded with a simple goal: to provide professional, practical and reliable ecological consultancy services that help clients navigate the planning process with confidence.

Based in the South of England, Green Acorn Ecology specialises in ecological surveys, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, ecological reporting and planning support for a wide range of development projects. We work with homeowners, architects, planning consultants, landscape architects, developers and fellow ecological consultancies, providing expert ecological advice that is both proportionate and commercially practical.

Whether you’re planning a residential extension, a housing development, a commercial scheme or a land management project, our aim is to help you understand your ecological requirements and keep your project moving forward.

The Story Behind Green Acorn Ecology

Green Acorn Ecology was established by experienced ecologist Lia Hutchinson following many years working within the ecology and environmental sector.

Throughout her career, Lia has supported a diverse range of projects, delivering ecological surveys, habitat assessments, protected species surveys and ecological reports for planning applications across the South of England and Greater London.

Having worked closely with developers, architects, planning consultants and local authorities, Lia recognised a growing need for an ecological consultancy that combines technical expertise with a genuinely personal and responsive service.

Green Acorn Ecology was created to fill that gap.

The business is built on a commitment to providing clear communication, practical advice and high-quality ecological support without unnecessary complexity or delays.

A Shared Passion for Ecology and Conservation

Green Acorn Ecology is very much a joint venture between Lia and her partner John.

Following a successful career in a different profession, John made the decision to pursue a new direction and support the growth of Green Acorn Ecology. His transition into the ecology sector reflects a shared passion for wildlife, conservation and the natural environment.

Together, Lia and John are building a consultancy that combines professionalism, technical knowledge and a genuine enthusiasm for protecting biodiversity whilst supporting sustainable development.

Their vision is simple: to provide ecological consultancy services that clients enjoy working with and trust to deliver high-quality results.

Our Ecological Consultancy Services

Green Acorn Ecology provides a wide range of ecological services to support planning applications, development projects and environmental compliance requirements.

Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA)

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal is often the first ecological survey required during the planning process. We assess habitats, identify ecological constraints and provide recommendations for further surveys where necessary.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments

With Biodiversity Net Gain now a key consideration for many developments, we help clients understand their obligations and develop practical strategies to achieve compliance.

Protected Species Surveys

We undertake a variety of protected species surveys, including:

  • Bat Surveys
  • Great Crested Newt Surveys
  • Reptile Surveys
  • Badger Surveys
  • Habitat Surveys and Mapping

Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)

Our Ecological Clerk of Works services provide on-site ecological supervision and advice during construction activities to ensure environmental compliance and best practice.

Ecological Reporting and Planning Support

We prepare professional ecological reports to support planning applications and provide ongoing ecological advice throughout the development process.

As the business grows, our commitment will remain the same: delivering high-quality ecological consultancy services that protect biodiversity whilst supporting successful development projects.

A Thank You

Launching a new business is never achieved alone.

We would like to thank Garry Jones and the team at Solo, a brand of Aspire to Grow Ltd, for their support in helping develop our new website.

Their guidance and support throughout the setup process have enabled us to focus on delivering ecological services whilst building a strong foundation for the future.
